Coaching Has Always Been My Destiny

Rugby has been in my blood for years. My uncle Dan Kilen played for the United States national teams in the 1980s and when I was a little kid we would toss the ball around at family gatherings. By the time high school rolled around my friend asked me to join a local rugby team. I immediately fell in love with the game and continued to play rugby in my time attending Luther College in Iowa.
During my time at Luther we caught lightning in a bottle. We were beating up all the big boys, Iowa, Iowa State. We did this all without a coach. I can’t imagine how well we could have done with a coach that had some knowledge and experience.
I continued to play club ball after college in my native Colorado and my passion for the game never waned. I moved to Idaho in summer 2013 and I still had the itch to be involved in the game even though I was no longer playing. Back on my high school days my coach, Paul O’Brian Had a tremendous impact on me. I recall him saying,
“Bobby, I know you are going to move away one day and do something great with your life. But wherever you end up you need to start a high school rugby club. You love the game too much not to share it with others.”
I started drafting a plan to start a high school rugby program for the spring of 2015. As fate would have it, the very next day I was walking through town and I saw 16 high school kids in rugby gear throwing a rugby ball around. I went up to one of them and asked if there was a rugby club around here.
He said “yes…no….boy I hope so. We have enough players but we do not have a coach.”
It was a perfect fit. I helped start the club and have now been able to spread the joy of the game as their coach to this day. My coach was right. Coaching has become a true passion for me.
My passion for coaching people transcends rugby, however. My career as a financial adviser, allows me to help coach people about other topics I am passionate about, financial planning and life insurance. Like rugby, these topics can be confusing or difficult to broach, but like my passion for growing the game, my desire to help people live life to the fullest and protect the ones they love keeps me going every day.
A number of former teammates and members of the local rugby community are now my clients. I have the fortunate circumstance of uniting my two passions and helping coach those who share the special bond of rugby both on and off the pitch.
